Hyundai Engine D4EA

The D4EA engine has been available to the consumer since 2000. The release of the model lasted for 10 years. It is a diesel four-cylinder in-line turbocharged power unit with a volume of 2.0 liters, a capacity of 112-151 hp with a torque of 245-350 Nm.

The engine was installed on Hyundai cars:

Santa Fe (2000-2009);

Tucson (2004-2009);

Elantra (2000-2006);

Sonata (2004-2010);

Traiet (2000-2008).

For Kia vehicles:

Sportage JE (2004-2010);

Carens UN (2006-2013);

Magentis MG (2005-2010);

Cerato LD (2003-2010).

The power unit was equipped with two types of turbines – WGT 28231-27000 (power was 112 hp) and VGT 28231 – 27900 (power 151 hp).

D4DD

In 2008, the production of the D4DD power plant began. The motor differed from its fellow D4DB electronic Common Rail fuel injection system. When creating engines for commercial vehicles, the main goal is not speed performance. For trucks and vans, torque is important, which is why the power of the D4DD is only 140 horsepower with a volume of 3.9 liters, but the torque is 380 Hm at 1600 rpm.

Common problems and how to fix them:

The most common problem is the freezing of the crankcase ventilation valve. This problem was first encountered in the winter of 2009. When the temperature drops below -10, the condensate accumulated in the metal tubes that connect the valve to the turbine freezes. The solution to the problem is to remove the valve, in addition, you need to plug the hose going to the oil pan. This will help get rid of this problem.

Turbine failure is also not uncommon. Most often this is due to cartridge wear. It occurs due to the ingress of dust through the air filter. As practice shows, motorists rarely monitor the condition of the filter elements. The worst case scenario is to throw oil into the intake; with large quantities, the lubricant can act as fuel for a diesel unit. In other words, the motor can go haywire.

Oil consumption at high mileage. This problem occurs in almost everyone, in most cases, replacing the valve stem seals will help. If after repairing the cylinder head the malfunction has not gone away, then it is recommended to overhaul the engine, otherwise the oil will begin to enter the combustion chamber. There is a risk that the engine may go into overdrive, after this there will be nothing to repair.

Faulty fuel injectors. This problem can be easily identified by the following signs:

  • uneven operation of the motor;
  • knocking in cylinders;
  • increased engine heat;
  • power plant power drop;
  • black exhaust;
  • increased fuel consumption.

Reliability, problems and repair of D4EB engines

Especially for Hyundai’s top-end cars, in 2006, a slightly larger diesel engine was created than the popular D4EA. The engineers took this 2nd generation D4EA as a basis and increased the displacement with larger cylinders. It was 83 mm, now the motor is bored out for an 87 mm piston. Thanks to this, the working volume increased from 2.0 to 2.2 liters.

A single-shaft 16-valve SOHC head is installed on top of the block, the design of which does not differ from the D4EA. There are also hydraulic lifters, which means you don’t have to think about when to adjust the valves. The timing drive uses a belt that runs 90 thousand km according to the manual and then needs to be replaced. Saving on such things can end up with a meeting of pistons with valves and bending of the latter.

Here is a common rail fuel system from Bosch with an injection pressure of up to 1600 bar. Since this is a turbodiesel, the MHI TF035HL turbine is installed on this engine, and the engine control is entrusted to the Bosch EDC16 ECU. This engine can be equipped with an open-type, closed-type, or no particulate filter, but all options meet Euro-4 environmental standards.

There are two versions of D4EB:

  • with software reduced power – 150 hp at 4000 rpm and with a torque of 335 Nm at 1800-2500 rpm.
  • full-weight version, 155 hp at 4000 rpm and with a torque of 343 Nm at 1800-2500 rpm.
