FORD MUSTANG

The history of the Mustang began in the early 1960s, when Ford's market position left much to be desired.

The main problem was the lack of models of the lower level of the mid-price range, while the main competitors GM and Chrysler had such models. Ford closest to this niche at that time were the budget Falcon in a good configuration and the Thunderbird, positioned by the company as a popular, but essentially expensive, in the initial configuration.

The Thunderbird line was not successful, and the Falcon brought meager profits, because. he fought in the market in the segment of cheap cars, where price competition is high.

Therefore, the company urgently needed a car that would bring the lion's share of income due to high popularity. Again, competitors at that time had such cars. Therefore, the creation of a new line was simply necessary.

In addition to the price, Thunderbird did not suit the target audience with capacity. But the Falcon could boast of just the capacity - it's no joke, 6 people easily fit in a passenger car. These conclusions were confirmed after the presentation to the general public of the Ford concept model in 1962.

As conceived by the creators of this concept, the car was supposed to occupy a niche between the cheap Falcon and the relatively expensive Thunderbird. But the public clearly did not like the model. The main complaints were all the same - capacity. It turned out that in the mind of the average American, a people's car had to be roomy.

So, people were happy with the Falcon's spaciousness, even the coupe version, which kept the back seat as big as the sedan. But for those buyers who were looking for a more expensive car with a similar capacity, Ford had nothing to offer.
